Scroll announces OpenVM, a new zkVM

Today, Scroll, Axiom, is the developer Max Gillette The Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) team announces OpenVM, an open source zkVM framework for instant proof.

OpenVM will be adopted by Scroll L2 as its zkVM, and plans to validate its main network blocks in the coming months. This moves the current Type 3 rollover to Type 1 zkEVM – the most equivalent zkEVM type in Ethereum.

According to a press release, Scroll's decision to design a new zkVM from the ground up was driven by the belief that many existing zkVM solutions were "monolithic" and "confined developers into vertically integrated stacks."

OpenVM's open source modular architecture enables Scroll to deliver features without making changes to the underlying circuitry, and enables developers to take advantage of zkVM improvements without having to modify the application code.

OpenVM joins an already crowded market with zkVMs. Unlike traditional virtual machines, zkVMs are designed to compile and execute smart contracts in zero-knowledge proofs in a secure and private way that does not reveal underlying data.

As shown in the chart below, proofs submitted to the Ethereum mainnet saw their peak in December 2023, and came largely from zk pools like Linea, ZKsync, and Scroll, rather than applications. Evidence volumes saw a decline in 2024, largely due to two factors.

These networks allow teams to outsource directory creation to specialized hardware providers who have ASIC hardware and GPUs that compete to create zk directories on the cheap.
