Ethereum's Buterin calls for ability to reduce global computing by 99%

Recently Blog postEthereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has suggested that available computing power could be reduced by up to 99% over the next few years to give humanity a few years to prepare for the Singularity.

This can be achieved with the help of location verification and device registration.

Additionally, Buterin proposed equipping industrial-scale devices with a chip that would require authorization for the device to remain operational.

This will help slow the progress of AI if there are some signs that near-super AI is approaching.

He argues that simply having the ability to significantly reduce global computing power if necessary would not negatively impact developers.

This could determine whether superintelligent AI ends up winning or losing to humanity, according to Buterin.

As U.Today reported, Buterin recently proposed addressing some of the specific threats posed by artificial general intelligence (AGI) such as taking control of physical infrastructure or manipulating humans with disinformation.

This comes amid growing speculation about the possibility of achieving exclusivity in the near future. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, hinted at such a possibility in his recent social media post.
