The problem here is that it makes things more complicated for the people who carry them, Schwartz noted. Tokens dropped over the air are taxed based on their value when distributed, even if they are meant to be held long-term or used in the ecosystem later.

If the value of these tokens increases, users may have to pay more taxes, which could make matters worse.

Instead of such reward systems, Schwartz proposed using methods that focus on estimating the value of existing tokens rather than issuing new tokens. This way, users don't have to deal with the direct tax issues that come with airdrops, and it's better for their interests in the long run.
